Lady Cougars Come Up Short; English Reaches 1,000 Scoring Mark

Williamsburg, Ky. - The Lady Cougar basketball team, ranked No. 21 in the NAIA Preseason Poll, fell to 18th-ranked University of the Cumberlands by a score of 76-63 on Tuesday evening. Columbia drops to 4-4 on the year with the defeat, their second loss at the hands of the Patriots (6-2) this season.

The opening frame saw a back-and-forth battle between the two squads as the Cumberlands used a late push to take a 40-30 lead into the locker room. The Lady Cougars received 14 first-half points from Lily Abreu, but shot just 35 percent from the field and one of ten from beyond the arc. The Patriots committed 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, but connected on 15 of 29 attempts (52 percent) from the floor.

Columbia would open the second half on a 13-2 run and take the lead on a Heather English three-pointer at the 14:52 mark. Cumberlands would respond though with an 11-2 run of their own to take the lead for good and secure their second victory over the Lady Cougars this season. The Patriots finished the game at a 51 percent clip from the field and drained 6 of 14 attempts (43 percent) from three-point range. Despite forcing Cumberlands into 22 turnovers, Columbia shot just 39 percent from the field for the game and was outrebounded 34-25. The Patriots converted 13 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points on the night.

English paced the Lady Cougars with 25 points for the game. Lily Abreu added 19 points and a team-high six rebounds and four assists. Julie Teeple chipped in 13 points and six rebounds as well.

Dace Bicane led Cumberlands with 18 points.

English's 25 points gives her 1,001 for her career, which ranks eighth all-time at Columbia.

The Lady Cougars return home to face MidAmerica Nazarene University (Kan.) on Tuesday, December 4th. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
