Lady Cougars Open Conference Play with a Win
COLUMBIA -- In their first outing of the American Midwest Conference season, the Columbia Lady Cougars posted a victory over Park University, 83-74 on Thursday night. The victory moves the Lady Cougars to 11-6 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Pirates drop to 11-3 overall and 1-2 versus league foes.
The Lady Cougars took a controlling 13 point lead midway through the first half after going on a 12-0 run sparked by a Heather English field goal. Columbia would follow that with a 10-1 run and lead by as many as 20 in the first frame but the Pirates were able to close the gap before the break, as the Lady Cougars held a 41-32 advantage.
Points at the charity stripe proved to be key for the Lady Cougars in the second frame, as they would make 29 of their 35 attempts from the line and send the visiting squad to the line just 16 times. Park cut the deficit to six with just under two minutes remaining, but that was as close as they would come as the Lady Cougars handed the Pirates their second straight loss.
Four of the Lady Cougar starters scored in double figures, led by Airelle Eldridge with 20 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Heather English chipped in 18 points and three steals while Julie Teeple posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Tierney Seifert posted 10 points and dished out five assists. Oasha White led the Pirates with 23 points.
The Lady Cougars continue conference play on Saturday, January 14th when they travel across town to play at Stephens College. Columbia and the Stars tip-off at 2:00 P.M.
