Lady Cougars Take Down Spartans
COLUMBIA -- With the regular season winding down, the Columbia College Lady Cougar basketball team posted another important victory Thursday, defeating American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe Missouri Baptist University by a score of 67-59. The Lady Cougars, ranked No. 25 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, improve to 19-8 on the season and 9-2 in the AMC while the Spartans drop to 8-18 and 2-9.
With three games remaining in AMC regular season play, the Lady Cougars are in the lead holding a one game lead on rival William Woods University.
Columbia's rebounding advantage in the first frame, 24-11, along with shooting 47 percent from the field, helped them to a 37-27 lead at the break. The Lady Cougars controlled the contest, holding off the Spartans and preventing them from getting within striking distance late in the contest, walking away with the eight-point victory.
The Lady Cougars outrebounded the Spartans 49-35 and dropped in 19 points off the bench compared to Missouri Baptist's 13.
Sophomore Heather English led Columbia with 15 points and five assists. Airelle Eldridge posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Fisher chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds while Julie Teeple had nine points and 12 rebounds.
Janelle Hensold had 16 points to lead the Spartans.
The Lady Cougars return to the hardwood on Saturday, February 18th when they host Williams Baptist College. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. in the Arena of Southwell Complex.
