Lake Businesses Optimistic After Fourth Weekend
"My business has doubled, I'm on pace for double the amount of business I did last year," Cathy Lane said. Lane is the owner of the Boat House Bar and Grill. "I mean, it's just a lot of fun, we have live entertainment every weekend, I think that has helped."
Some boaters described the lake economy as improving and looking good. Another, who said he has lived at the lake for 11 years said, "It's been bad, but I see it's looking better this year, at least a little."
Donny Larsen has opened for Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet, but since 1994 the guitarist plays for crowds around the Lake of the Ozarks.
"Last night, my wife and I were out on the boat, and every place we stopped, they were doing real well, so we're hoping for a resurgence," Larsen said. Although, he remains optimistic, the lake (and Vietnam) veteran admits life on the water is unpredictable. "It doesn't suck, but I don't think anybody's got a feel of the pulse (of the economy)."
Lane added she was happy to see recent investments in her business paying off.
"I have started advertising a lot more, that is sort of building up the business and I'm growing it from there."
Residents here certainly seem to be hoping a rising tide raises all boats.
