Language on annual increases added to ballot on cigarette tax hike
JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Secretary of State's office added words onto a tax ballot issue on cigarette taxes for the November election.
The phrase "which fee shall increase annually" was added to a constitutional Amendment to Article IV, which relates to taxes and fees on cigarettes.
The ballot now officially reads:
Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to:
- increase taxes on cigarettes each year through 2020, at which point this additional tax will total 60 cents per pack of 20
- create a fee paid by cigarette wholesales of 67 cents per pack of 20 on certain cigarettes, which fee shall increase annually; and
- deposit funds generated by these taxes and fees into a newly established Early Childhood Health and Education Trust Fund?
Raise Your Hands for Kids is an organization that originally wanted the language.
It tweeted Tuesday and said:
Thrilled to have our measure certified for the ballot! YES on 3! Thank you to our supporters -- onward to November! https://t.co/SOnLzZ4r4d— RaiseYourHandforKids (@RYH4KMO) August 9, 2016
