Last day to sign up for health care under Affordable Care Act
COLUMBIA - Sunday marks the last day to sign up for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Primaris hosted a sign-up event at its location on Keene Street in Columbia for those who waited to sign up hours before the midnight deadline.
Some only found out about the health care requirements when it came time to file their taxes.
"As people are filing for their taxes, they're learning about the shared responsibility--or penalty," said Emily Young, an application counselor with Central Missouri Community Action. "They're having to pay the penalty for 2014, and they want to avoid that for 2015."
Young said the health care deadline took some people by surprise.
"People who are filing their own [taxes] may be a little bit confused when that comes up, because they have to file an additional form," said Young. "It is a surprise to most who are filing taxes."
Young said people without insurance who do not sign up today could have to pay a penalty of $325 or two percent of their household income, whichever is greater. She said those who already have health insurance coverage do not need to sign up today and will not pay a penalty.
Those wishing to enroll can visit healthcare.gov by midnight Sunday to sign up for health care coverage.
