A moment of brilliance from substitute Soony Saad and a classy finish from Claudio Bieler gave Sporting Kansas City a 1-0 victory over DC United Friday night.
In the 89th minute with the match tied 0-0, Saad who had come into the game just six minutes earlier, won the ball in the corner, beat Marcelo Saragosa and sent in a cross to Claudio Bieler who curled in the eventual winner. It was the designated player's fourth goal of the season and his second winner in as many games.
Sporting was the better side for much of the night, but couldn't apply the finishing touch against DC keeper Bill Hamid.
Before the goal, KC's best chance came in the 70th minute. Benny Feilhaber found Graham Zusi in a pocket of space, but the US international blasted his shot just over the goal from 25 yards.
With the missed opportunities piling up and the game creeping toward a draw, Sporting coach Peter Vermes brought on Peterson Joseph and Saad in an attempt to break the deadlock. The moves paid off as pressure from Joseph and Saad forced the turnover that led to the late goal.
The win moves Sporting into sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference on eleven points, one point behind leaders Montreal Impact. DC stays in eighth position in the East with just four points from five games.
Sporting now gets next weekend off before traveling to take on the New York Red Bulls on April 17.
