Law Enforcement Cracks Down on Car Seat Use
COLUMBIA - The Boone County Sheriff's Department is one department that will look this week for drivers who have not secured children in appropriate child seats. Child Passenger Safety Week runs though Saturday. Missouri state law requires all children under the age of eight to be in an appropriate child or booster seat, unless they are 80 pounds or more and 4'9'' or taller.
Children under the age of 16 must also be fastened in a seatbelt. All of these violations are considered primary offenses. This means deputies can pull over motorists for violations of these laws.
Car crashes are the number one killer of children. According to the Boone County Sheriff's Department, more than 70 percent of all child restraints are not used correctly.
