Lawyer For Taiwanese Official Seeking Agreement
KANSAS CITY (AP) - The lawyer for a Taiwan business representative jailed on a federal labor violation has been working on a possible plea agreement for his client.
Hsien-Hsien Liu, director general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Kansas City, waived her right to bail during a hearing Wednesday. Her attorney, Jim Wirken, said he has been in contact with prosecutors about a possible agreement.
Liu was charged last week with fraud in foreign labor contracting. She's accused of underpaying a housekeeper hired from the Philippines, keeping her isolated, and making her work 16- to 18-hour days. Liu faces up to five years in prison.
Wirken said he's seeking to get a result in the case "sooner instead of later."
The prosecutor's office didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
