COLUMBIA - Schnucks has recalled 130 pounds of chicken due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The store's "Curry White Meat Chicken Salad with Walnuts" product at issue was shipped to stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin. FSIS says that because the product was sold at deli counters, customers will have the product in various types of packaging. Customers who purchased the product in a Schnucks store between April 24 and May 2 may have a contaminated product. FSIS says possibly contaminated bulk case labels "may bear the case code 0989674 or 0963124 as well as establishment number 'EST. P-13562' inside the USDA mark of inspection."

If a customer consumes food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, they can contract listeriosis. Listeriosis can cause fever, head, neck and muscle aches as well as other symptoms often preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. The infection primarily affects older adults, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women.

The potential contamination was discovered during a routine inspection on April 28. Further investigation revealed that bulk walnuts from an outside supplier may have been contaminated.

FSIS asks consumers with questions about this recall to contact Joannie Taylor, Director of Consumer Affairs, at (314) 994-4400 or 1-800-264-4400. The online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can also be used for reports at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/reportproblem.
