Local Businesses Miss Out Due to Power Outage
COLUMBIA - Local businesses are counting losses Monday after a power outage near Grindstone Parkway cost multiple stores. A neutral transmission line fell and caused a series of small fires behind Walmart on Green Meadows Road.
The Deuce Pub & Pit, McAlister's Deli, Tasti D-Lite, Fuddruckers, and Walmart were among the outlets reporting missed profits. McAlister's managers are reporting a $500 difference between this Sunday and last. Tasti D-Lite is claiming losses around $250. The Deuce Pub & Pit was without power for at least two hours, although exact losses are not available at this time.
Some local residents were without power from 2:15 pm until 7:30 pm Sunday. A Columbia Water and Light spokesperson said that the repair was a tricky one because the line fell in an area with rough terrain. On-call staff had to be brought in to help with the fix because it was a Sunday.
Columbia Water and Light spokeseprson Connie Kacprowicz said that nearly "1,400 customers were without power" at 2:30 pm. Some residents did not regain electricity until 7:30 pm.
McAlister's Deli manager Nathan Bugg said that customers were "unhappy, but they understood it was electric" and there was nothing the store could do. He said that luckily for his store, the outage came just after the lunch rush, otherwise they could have missed out on thousands of dollars.
