HOLTS SUMMIT - Locally-based Champs Chicken opened its 500th location this week in Oklahoma.  Despite the state of the economy, the franchise operation continues to grow.  The company markets its food through storefronts in grocery and convenience stores. CEO and founder Shawn Burcham said the company is aiming to open 5,000 stores in the next 10 years.  He said part of the success is due to the company's employees.

"I think one of the things I really believe in is that businesses don't grow, people grow.  I attribute our success to the good people that we have and those who have been with me for a long time.  They continue to make changes to what they have to do in their roles and those who make those changes are really successful," Burcham said.

Marketing Manager Mia Platz said another huge part of the company's success is its products.  Champs Chicken has a variety of products including their signature chicken fingers, fish, sides, and many more.  The building comes equipped with a testing kitchen where employees and customers can taste the products.

"Not only do we distribute our food to local supermarkets and convenience stores, but we teach them how to prepare it the right way," Platz said.  "We teach them our service as well."

Shawn Burcham and his father also created a breading machine for the company.  Burcham said it saves time and money.  Champs Chicken is now located in 28 states and INC. Magazine has ranked it one of the fastest growing privately-owned companies in the U.S. for the last four years.

"As you go from 500 to 5,000 stores, the biggest thing I want to take place is to advance people in their careers and hire the people with the best attitudes," Burcham said.  "I can't see this company slowing down."
