Local Radio Station Hosts Beard Beauty Pageant
COLUMBIA - Local radio station KOPN hosted a beauty pageant for beards Wednesday night at Cafe Berlin.
Co-host Dan Bugnitz said the money raised will go toward the radio show Farm and Fiddles.
"It's a radio show that celebrates and explores rural life," Bugnitz said. "Rural life is sort of in a crisis right now, it's threatened by large farming and large companies."
Judges based their scores on the beard's shape, color, and over all style. Contestants also had to answer beauty pageant questions onstage.
"My favorite is 'Who is the most important person in the world and why?'" said co-host Margot McMillen.
One contestant has been growing his beard for 6 months.
"I also looked up some pageant questions on-line," contestant Kyle Parker said.
Half of the money raised goes toward Farm and Fiddles, the other half is the grand prize.
