COLUMBIA - As we get closer to the Christmas holiday, folks at local packing and shipping stores are getting busier.

KOMU-8 News visited the UPS store on Nifong Blvd. Wednesday evening. While it wasn't very busy, store manager John Kadlec says that will soon change.

Kadlec has worked at that store for 22 years and says December is hands down the busiest month of the year. Normally, he ships around one thousand packages a month. This Christmas, he estimates his store on Nifong will ship between 4,500 and 5,000 packages.

"Cheery, joyful, exciting, crazy, tense. On edge," Kadlec said of his store's work environment around Christmas.

He offers a few tips for people shipping Christmas presents.

  • With Christmas on a Tuesday, Kadlec says you need to ship earlier this year. If it's going to the west coast, he says to have it mailed by Tuesday, Dec. 18.
  • UPS will deliver all packages up until Christmas Eve but he says play it safe and have your package mailed by Friday, Dec. 21.
  • If you pack items yourself, he says to use a good, sturdy box with no wiggle room for the item.
