Locals Learn Tips On Preparing Gardens For Winter
COLUMBIA- A small group came out to the Columbia Public Library Monday night to learn how to winterize their gardens for snow and frost.
Local horticulturalist Alan Helland shared his knowledge of gradening with people and provided good tips for them to prepare their gardens for winter. The topics he discussed include amending soil, pruning and sanitation, compost, cultivation, mulch and cover crops, season extension, cool season crops, tool care, transplant and planning next year.
Helland said taking care of gardens during winter is very important and it will make spring garden tasks simpler. Hellend also said soil test from University of Missouri provide a good start to check gardens' conditions.
Helland answered questions from people who are struggling with gardens and introduced several books about winter gardening to help people solve problems and better supervise their gardens.
