Major Ice Storm Slams Missouri
The first round of winter weather will come to an end early Saturday morning. There will a brief lull in the precipitation, but the freezing rain and sleet is expected to begin again late Saturday afternoon. The mixture of freezing rain and sleet will coat trees, power lines, and other elevated surfaces as well as roadways. Widespread power outages can be expected in some areas, especially south of Interstate 70 and near the Lake of the Ozarks where the heaviest ice is expected to accumulate. Travel across central and western Missouri is strongly discouraged over the weekend, as weather conditions and roadways will be treacherous.
Freezing rain and sleet will become heavy into Sunday morning, and by Sunday afternoon, anywhere from 1/4" to 1 1/2"+ of ice will likely accumulate across Mid-Missouri with additional sleet accumulations as well. Areas along and south of Highway 50 will see the heaviest precipitation.
