Man dies after fire at abandoned St. Louis warehouse
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A blaze at an abandoned St. Louis warehouse has killed a 22-year-old man and critically injured another man.
Fire officials said the Sunday afternoon fire that killed Zach Mantei was likely accidental. St. Louis Fire Capt. Garon Mosby said Tuesday afternoon that the men had trespassed and vandalized the abandoned warehouse near the Mississippi River.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the warehouse contained 55-gallon drums of an unidentified, flammable liquid that had been broken into with an ax or other tool. Investigators believe something in the air ignited the vapors from the liquid and caused a rapid release of energy, or explosion.
Officials said the flames were under control within about 15 minutes.
