Man Gets 18 Years for Killing Baby
SPRINGFIELD (AP) - A Springfield man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing his girlfriend's 7-month-old son. The sentence was imposed yesterday after Carl Turks entered a plea on a charge of second-degree murder in the July 2006 death of Lawrence Parks III. The plea is not an admission of guilt, but a concession that prosecutors have sufficient evidence for a conviction. During the hearing, the child's mother, Stacey Parks, told Judge Thomas Mountjoy the murder had devastated her life. She left her son with Turks on July 10th, 2006, while she visited an employment agency. Turks called 911 to report Parks was not breathing. The boy died the next day. An autopsy ruled the death was a homicide by abusive head trauma.
