Man going to prison for assault with hammer, shoving officer
COLUMBIA - A Columbia man will spend the next decade behind bars for burglary and assault after his sentencing on Monday.
Fifty-two-year-old Glen Cotton will serve a 10-year sentence for burglary and a seven-year sentence for assault at the same time, which will equal 10 years behind bars.
Police arrested Cotton in June 2014 on several charges, including assault, assault of an officer, interfering with arrest and possession of a controlled substance.
Police said Cotton forced his way into a home on North William Street, shoving a man and a woman. Cotton attacked the man with a liquor bottle, repeatedly punched him, threw cans of food at him and hit him with a hammer.
When officers attempted to arrest Cotton, he shoved the officer.
Police said the victim was not hurt in the incident.
