Man in St. Louis Police Custody Dies
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A man who was in custody after his arrest in St. Louis is dead of an apparent heart attack that occurred soon after he fought with officers and was sprayed with pepper spray.
St. Louis police say doctors believe 49-year-old Tommy Fluellen likely died of cardiac arrest after his arrest Monday afternoon.
Fluellen initially ran when an officer tried to arrest him. Because he held his waistband as he ran, the officer drew his pistol and chased him for fear Fluellen had a gun. Police say Fluellen tried to run up a retaining wall but was captured after police used pepper spray on him.
Police say Fluellen later became unresponsive while in the police cruiser. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
An investigation continues.
