PLATTE CITY (AP) - A northwest Missouri man has been sentenced to prison for killing a woman and leaving her body in a burning car.

Platte County officials say 41-year-old Shawn D. Griffin was sentenced after pleading in the death of Angela Newsom in November 2010.

Griffin was sentenced Thursday to 15 years on the murder charge and 10 years for armed criminal action, with the sentences to run concurrently. He had been scheduled for trial on Dec. 10.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports (http://bit.ly/11Mz5Yi ) Griffin told police he and Newsom were fighting when she got a gun out of closet. He said the gun went off when he tried to grab it.

Griffin then put Newsom's body inside her vehicle, drove to a rural area near Cameron and set the vehicle on fire.
