Man pleads guilty to firearm charge
JEFFERSON CITY - A man who illegally possessed firearms he stole from a series of homes has pleaded guilty.
Stephan Whelan, 22, of Jefferson City, burglarized numerous homes around mid-Missouri from September 2016 to December 2016. He told police he had been involved in so many burglaries that he could not remember where certain items had been taken from.
Whelan admitted to trading items stolen from homes, including firearms, for methamphetamine.
Police arrested Whelan on Dec. 8, 2016, during a traffic stop. A Cole County sheriff's deputy pulled over a black Toyota. As the deputy approached the vehicle, he saw several items that had been reported stolen.
Sentencing hearings have yet to be scheduled. The maximum sentence is up to 10 years in a federal prison without parole.
