ST. JOSEPH (AP) - A St. Joseph man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of a disabled Army veteran.

Jered Houston was also sentenced Thursday to 15 years for armed criminal action in the August 2010 death of 56-year-old Charley Lonjers.

Prosecutors say Lonjers was watering his lawn when he was pistol whipped during an attempted robbery, and then was shot.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports prosecutors contend Houston fired the fatal shot.

Houston acknowledged being at the scene but said he wasn't the shooter.
