Many North Community residents frustrated with recent crimes
COLUMBIA - The victim of the Friday night’s shooting in the 1800 block of McKee Street has been identified as Nathan Earl Taylor of Kansas City, Missouri.
According to a news release from the police department 31-year-old Taylor had one gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died shortly after.
This incident and the Wednesday shooting at Mckee Street Park has left some North Community residents frustrated with the crime and violence in the neighborhood.
Resident Christina Merideth is concerned about her child’s safety.
“I feel like the neighborhood is getting worse, and I think guns are a serious problem in Columbia,” she said. “The night before last there were shots fired at the park but no one injured and the very next night someone is shot and killed, all this happening at the bus stop my 7-year-old uses.”
Police are currently searching for the suspect, who was driving an older, white SUV or pick-up truck.
Resident Robert Hamell said community input is the first step to improving safety.
“We as citizens have to buckle down and try to minimize the crime rating,” Hamell said. “Everybody has to have that mindset. You know, ‘I don’t want my kid out here getting hurt’ and what not so we’re going to do something about it.”
The major concern from residents is safety of the youth.
"We have kids to worry about. We want them to feel safe in the neighborhood where they live," Hamell said.
The investigation is ongoing.
