"March Mathness" taking place at Rock Bridge Saturday
COLUMBIA - Rock Bridge High School hosted "March Mathness" a math competition and fair for elementary students Saturday.
In its second year, the event gives fourth and fifth grade students the opportunity to learn more about math through different programs in classrooms, including stations focused on geometry and algebra.
As well, students all take a 45-question test, with the top ten students in each grade receiving prizes. Event organizers said it's common for multiple students to get every question correct on the test, even though some of the questions are at a high-school level.
The event is run by Rock Bridge's Mu Alpha Theta, the math honors society at the school. The nearly 100 members of the organization run all aspects of the event, from designing the test questions to facilitating who runs each classroom during the fair.
Event organizer Boon Palipatana said nearly 170 signed up for the event, surpassing the group's expectations.
The event name is a play on words of March Madness, the term used for the annual college basketball tournament each spring.
