Mayor Who Stole from Town Gets 21 Months Prison
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The mayor of a tiny St. Louis County community has been ordered to spend a year and nine months on federal charges linked to his spending the impoverished town's money to further his lavish lifestyle.
A St. Louis federal judge also ordered 47-year-old Keith Conway to pay more than $62,000 in restitution for his fraud involving Kinloch.
Conway pleaded guilty in August to wire fraud, theft and witness-tampering charges.
Prosecutors say Conway spent the stolen money on flights to Las Vegas and Florida, Bahamas cruises with a friend, a time-share condominium, and to pay off his credit cards and electric bills.
They say he stole from a $90,000 federal grant that was supposed to pay for an additional police officer for the community, which has fewer than 300 residents.
