McCaskill Clears Confusion
WASHINGTON D.C. (AP) - Senator Claire McCaskill is trying to clear up confusion about what is and what isn't an earmark. The Missouri Democrat has helped lead the fight against lawmakers inserting pet projects into legislation until reforms make the process clearer. But her name popped up recently as one of dozens of lawmakers who had requested earmarks. McCaskill says nothing has changed except confusion over the definition of the word. She says she signed on to letters seeking to boost spending for programs like breast cancer research and anti-drug programs. It's unclear what portion of the funds might be spent in Missouri, so McCaskill says they aren't earmarks. McCaskill is now trying to get her name removed from lists identifying her as seeking earmarks.
