COLUMBIA — Memorial Day weekend festivities are underway following the Salute to Veterans wreath laying ceremony outside the Boone County Courthouse Wednesday night.

The ceremony, which is aimed at honoring the 200 plus servicemen and women in Boone County who have lost their lives in various wars, is more than 25 years old.

The wreaths were laid beneath veterans walls outside the courthouse; the walls commemorate wars starting with the Civil War.

Colonel Bill Boston, a longtime volunteer at the event, said it is important to realize the importance of this weekend's holiday.

"I think it's important for the community to remember soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, who have given up everything," Boston said.

While the festivities honoring those who have fallen will run for five days, Boston said he would like to see more in the community taking time for remembrance throughout the year.

"Come by here and just look at these monuments," he said. There are well over 200 names on these monuments going back to the Civil War. I think it's important we look at those names, they represent actual people."

Around 28 wreaths were laid.
