DES MOINES, IA - The Columbia College men's soccer team posted a big upset tonight, defeating No. 6 ranked Grand View (Iowa) College 3-2 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Cougars, ranked No. 22 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, improve to 1-0-1 on the season while the Vikings fall to 0-2-0.
Columbia struck first in the contest when Marko Paunovic notched his second goal of the season in the 19th minute. Antonio Aryes and Andres Acosta assisted on the play. The lead didn't last long as the Vikings tied up the contest with a goal just four minutes later.
The Cougars jumped ahead with 43rd minutes left in the half on an unassisted goal by JP Gronberg from 25 yards out. Columbia added some insurance a minute later when Dale McCormick's header found the back of the net off a corner kick that was put into play by Adam McChesney.
With a 3-1 lead going into the second half the Cougars were able to hold off the Vikings for the first 32 minutes. However, a free kick at the top of the box chipped away at the deficit as Grand View was able to score and make it a one-goal game. With the clock ticking down the Cougars stepped up their defense and shut down Grand View's offense to walk away with the victory.
Junior Matt McKenna took the win in goal for Columbia with four saves. The Cougars return to the field on Wednesday, September 5 when they travel to Springfield, Ill. for their first conference match-up of the season. Columbia faces Benedictine University at Springfield in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
