Mid-Missouri Honors Its Veterans
COLUMBIA - Mid-Missourians around the area planned events to honor veterans Friday for Veterans Day.
- Columbia College will participate in Remembrance Day National Roll Call along with nearly 170 other college campuses. This event focuses on remembring the 6,300 American casualties from Afghanistan, Iraq, and other areas in the past decade. Participants will meet at 10 a.m. and read 4,000 names in the student commons. Organizers expect the event to last about five hours.
- There will be a rededication of the American War Mothers Monument on MU campus at noon. Chancellor Brady Deaton will speak at the rededication, just east of Memorial Union outside Stewart Hall. Mothers of soldiers dedicated the monument in 1930 on Rollins, but crews removed it in 1987 to widen the street. The monument is newly restored.
- The Mizzou Joint ROTC's Annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 10:45 a.m. by the columns on MU campus. The procession will continue down Eighth Street and end in front of the Boone County Courthouse. Because Veterans Day falls on 11/11/11, there will be a ceremony to follow outside the courthouse at 11:11 a.m.
