COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - The search for a new chancellor at the University of Missouri-Columbia comes amid high-profile vacancies at other large universities around the country.

The Columbia Missourian reports the Board of Curators hopes to avoid selecting an interim replacement for Chancellor Brady Deaton, who retires in November. The rapid search unfolds as the University of Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State each seek to hire their own new leaders.

Missouri engineering professor Harry Tyrer, chairman of the Faculty Council, says he expects a private search firm to help identify candidates.

Deaton will remain on campus and head a new global development center named in his honor.
