Missouri Credit Union Warns Customers of Potential Fraud
COLUMBIA - Missouri Credit Union customers received letters starting August 16 notifying them of possible fraud. The credit union discovered on August 5 that a secure file had inadvertently been made public through access on the financial institution's website.
MCU member Rachel Watts said the letter she received stated that some customers' passwords had been compromised.
"They were basically concerned about the protection of our information and suggested changing passwords," said Watts.
The file contained lists of members' names, addresses, social security numbers, account numbers, and MCU teller/call-in passwords. Once discovered, the credit union removed the file and investigated the incident. MCU determined there were only 10 visits total to the website during the time it was available. It is unknown if anyone viewed the information in the file, but Watts is still uneasy about the incident.
"It's a little concerning," said Watts, "but it's always good practice to change your passwords anyways because nowadays it's just so easy to get into things like that."
A statement by MCU President Hal James apologized for the incident and ensured customers that the lending institution is working to improve security measures.
The union notified all of its customers to be safe. MCU has arranged to have AllClear ID protect the identity of its members whose information was in the file for more than a year.
MCU has set up a call center for customers with questions about the incident and what they can do to protect themselves. Any customer with questions should call 1-877-437-4006 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
