Missouri Election Season Opens as Candidates File
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - The 2014 campaign season is officially underway in Missouri.
A total of 287 candidates filed paperwork Tuesday at the Missouri secretary of state's office in order to put their names on the August primary ballot.
That appears to be the lowest number of first-day filers since 1998.
One reason the numbers are down is that Missouri has only one statewide office up for election his year. That office is state auditor, and Republican incumbent Tom Schweich was the only person to file for it Tuesday.
On opening day, a total of 191 Republicans, 91 Democrats, four Libertarians and one Constitution Party candidate filed for federal, state and judicial offices.
Candidate filing runs through March 25.
