JEFFERSON CITY - Members of the Missouri Corn Growers Association told KOMU 8 News Monday corn season is off to its hottest start in nearly a decade.

The USDA released data Monday, which backs that assertion. The report showed Missouri corn condition rated as either "good or excellent" is higher at this point in the year than any growing season after 2005.

"The last couple of weeks in our particular area, the rain has been falling. Just every time we need a little shot of rain we're getting it," Jefferson City farmer Jay Fischer said. "Not really any delays in planting to speak of. The crop at this point looks pretty good."

Fischer said this is the best start to the growing season he has seen in "almost ten years."

"This years corn crop is looking stellar," Missouri Corn Growers Association spokeswoman Becky Frankenbach said. "If the weather cooperates, it could be a bin buster."

Fischer said the corn progress is so great because weather conditions have been just about perfect. He said there has been just enough rain for the right amount of moisture to be in the air, and it has not been too hot. He said his corn crop this year is a full month ahead of last year's version.

"It looks great now, but that doesn't mean it's going to stay that way," Fischer said. "There can always be a flood or a drought to mess it up."

Missouri experienced drought conditions in 2012, and too much summer rain in 2013 to grow crops as effectively.
