JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri House has endorsed a tax amnesty period for delinquent taxpayers.
Officials would waive interest and penalties for those who pay their overdue taxes between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31 of this year. Taxpayers who use the amnesty would need to comply with state tax laws for the next eight years or be charged the penalties and interest that were waived.
House members endorsed the proposal Tuesday. It needs another vote before moving to the Senate.
Missouri lawmakers previously have considered a tax amnesty period and have done so twice in recent years. An amnesty brought in $74 million during the 2002 fiscal year and $42 million a year later.
