Missouri loses most local sales, taxes to online purchases
COLUMBIA - Every state in the U.S. loses money to online sales, but a new study reveals Missouri is the biggest loser.
Civic Economics and The American Booksellers Association collaborated on a report, which revealed Missouri loses the most sales and tax dollars.
The study focuses on sales by the industry leader, Amazon. Missouri loses $60 million in sales and nearly $68 million in total taxes to Amazon purchases.
Many states charge sales tax for online purchases, but Missouri is not one of them. Colorado was number two, just after Missouri, for most tax loss. However, Colorado just started charging sales tax this month.
