Missouri's Big Beef
"We have over $1.5 billion in sales in the cattle industry in Missouri each year," said Brent Bryant of the state Cattlemen's Association. "And 68,000 farm families raise cattle in Missouri, so it has a huge impact on the local and state economy."
John Kleiboeker of the state Soybean Association added, "Beef cattle consume a lot of soybean meal. In fact, beef and dairy cattle combined consume about 14% of the soybean meal we produce here in Missouri."
Missouri farmers raise about 5 million cattle each year, which eat 144,000 tons of soybean meal each year. That's one reason the state ranks sixth in U.S. soybean production.
