ROLLA, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri University of Science and Technology researcher is being recognized for his work understanding human behavior through Internet usage patterns.

Assistant professor of computer science Sriram Chellappan has been a member of the Rolla university's faculty since 2008.

Now, he is being recognized as an outstanding junior faculty member by the National Science Foundation. The organization is honoring him with its Faculty Early Career Development CAREER Award.

In a study published in December, Chellappan and fellow researchers found that students who show signs of depression tend to use the Internet differently than those without such symptoms.

Chellappan will receive nearly $430,000 in CAREER funding over three years to continue his research. He's interested in developing software that could help individuals determine whether their Internet usage patterns may indicate depression
