Missouri State Historian Urges Return to Civility
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - From the Civil War to Big 12 basketball, Missouri residents and Kansans have taken pride in their mutual contempt for those on the other side of the border. A Missouri State University professor speaking Monday in Columbia says it's past time for the squabbling to end.
Historian Jeremy Neely's lecture at Columbia College is entitled "The Border War is Only a Memory: The Search for Reunion and Civility in Postwar Missouri." His appearance is part of a nationwide effort by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Bar Association to promote kinder dialogue.
Neely is scheduled to speak from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Launer Auditorium on campus. The free event is open to the public and will include a dessert reception following Neely's talk.
