Missouri woman convicted in abuse death of infant daughter
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) — A western Missouri woman has been convicted in the fatal abuse death of her 3-week-old daughter.
Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster says 28-year-old Rebecca Matthews, of Richmond, is scheduled to be sentenced May 25. Jurors found her guilty Wednesday of child abuse resulting in death and multiple child abuse and endangerment charges. The case was tried in Clay County on a change of venue.
Matthews was accused of failing to seek care for the baby when she stopped breathing in 2012 after her ribs were fractured. Doctors testified that the injuries were consistent with squeezing.
Prosecutors say three other children also were abused.
Charges are pending against her husband, Dennis Matthews. Rebecca Matthews also is awaiting trial on charges that improperly caged reptiles, including alligators, placed the children at risk.
