Missouri Wrestler J'den Cox Wins National Wrestling Championship
OKLAHOMA CITY - Missouri freshman wrestler J'den Cox defeated Ohio State senior Nick Heflin to become the NCAA National Wrestling Champion at the 197 pound weight class. Cox is the youngest Mizzou wrestler to win a national championship.
The match began scoreless as neither wrestler was able to score in the first period. Cox began the second period on bottom and was able to escape right away. Cox was able to maintain a 1-0 lead at the end of the second period.
In the third period, Heflin was able to get an escape of his own to tie the match up at 1-1. But, with 30 seconds left in the match, Heflin received his second stalling warning and gave Cox a 2-1 lead.
Heflin almost won the match as he took Cox to the mat in the waning seconds of the match, but the referees said that Heflin's takedown was too late.
Cox and junior Drake Houdashelt were the two All-Americans for the Missouri Tigers wrestling team. Houdashelt placed fifth overall after defeating Mitchell Minotti of Lehigh by a score of 3-0.
