Mizzou Drops Opener to No. 19 Aggies

COLLEGE STATION, TX -- The No. 10 Missouri Tigers saw their 17-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night, as the No. 19 Texas A&M Aggies pulled out a 2-1 victory to open the series. Mizzou falls to 22-4 on the season and is now 3-1 in conference play.

Texas A&M struck first, getting a two run homer off the bat of pitcher Mel Dumezich in the bottom half of the first inning. Meaghan May drew a two-out walk ahead of Dumezich, who hit an opposite field home run for her ninth of the season. The homer snapped Mizzou's scoreless inning streak at 55.0 innings and Chelsea Thomas' personal streak at 46.0 innings.

Missouri didn't get a base runner until the top of the fourth inning, when Corrin Genovese roped a double over the head of the Aggie center fielder for a stand up double. Two batters later, Kelsea Roth hit a liner to center for the second double of the inning, plating Genovese to cut the lead in half.

The Aggies looked to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Amber Garza doubled into the gap in left-center with one out to get into scoring position. Thomas worked out of it, however, getting a ground out back to the circle and a strikeout to keep the game at 2-1.

Mizzou picked up a one out double of their own in the top of the sixth, as Jenna Marston doubled for the team's third hit of the game. Unfortunately, Marston was stranded at second, as Genovese grounded out to short and Ashley Fleming struck out to end the inning.

Down to their last at bat, the Tigers got a single by Roth in the seventh to put the first runner aboard. Unfortunately, Mizzou couldn't do anything with the leadoff hit, as the next three were retired in order to end the game.

The loss was the first for Thomas in 10 decisions, falling to 11-2 on the season. In six innings of work, she allowed the two runs on just three hits, walked a batter and struck out five. Dumezich went all seven innings with seven strikeouts, four hits allowed and no walks issued. Roth picked up two of Mizzou's four hits and drove in the lone run.

Game two of the series will take place on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT from the Aggie Softball Complex.
