COLUMBIA - The sixth seeded Missouri Tigers were looking for a repeat of the 2011 Super Regional when they swept the now 11th ranked Washington Huskies in 2 games. The winner of this best of three game series will advance to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Things got off to a shaky start for pitcher Chelsea Thomas who had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the top of the first. Strong defensive play from her infielders got her out of the jam unscathed.
A highly defensive game did not allow many runs as the teams were held scoreless through the first 5 innings. Missouri broke the scoreless tie with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning as 1B Kelsea Roth hit an infield single to score 2B Emily Crane who was on third base. This gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead going into the final inning.
With one out in the top of the 7th, 3B Princess Krebs committed an error which set up an infield single on the next play scoring Washington's INF Dani Braun. Washington tied the game 1-1 and ventured into the bottom of the 7th with a pitching change.
Pitcher Bryana Walker replaced Kaitlin Inglesby and retired Missouri's side with ease resulting in extra innings. The 8th inning began with Missouri committing their 3rd error of the game as Roth overthrew Crane at 1st allowing Washington's INF Kelli Suguro to advance to 2nd base. Next up in Washington's order was OF Victoria Hayward who knocked a double to center field scoring Suguro and giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Missouri's failed to capitalize in the bottom of the 8th inning surrendering the opening game to Washington. The two teams will play the final two games Friday at 5 p.m. on ESPNU and 8 p.m. on ESPN.
