Mizzou Softball sweeps Western Illinois
MACOMB, IL-- The Missouri Tigers softball team held Western Illinois scoreless in both games of a double-header Wednesday, resulting in two wins.
Freshman Lauren Rice continued her hot start to the season in the 7-0 game one win. Rice allowed only two hits over her five innings of work, striking out two batters.
Rice has a 3.53 ERA this year and has already thrown 126 innings this year, which is the most on the team.
Danielle Baumgartner closed the door for the Tigers in game one, throwing two shut out innings and allowing only one hit.
In game two, however, no relief pitching was required for the Tigers, as junior Madi Norman pitched a shutout in the Tigers' 2-0 victory.
Norman only surrendered four hits and one walk over seven innings. Wednesday was Norman's first appearance in which she allowed no runs since March 21, in a game against Southeast Missouri.
Outside of the pitching, the Tigers offense was efficient, tallying 17 hits in the two games.
Sophomore Cayla Kessinger was the offensive standout Wednesday. Kessinger went a perfect 4-4 from the plate with 3 RBI in game one; she also drew two walks in game two, resulting in just one recorded at bat.
The Tigers will play another double-header next Wednesday when they travel to Kansas to face Wichita State.
