Mizzou Softball Visits No. 16 Oklahoma State
STILLWATER, Ok. -- The eighth-ranked Missouri Tigers softball team travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on the No. 16 Oklahoma State Cowgirls in what will be their final road trip of the 2011 season. The opening game starts on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT, with the finale beginning on Sunday at Noon CT.
The Tigers are coming off a 10-0 rout of SIU-Edwardsville on Wednesday that saw Chelsea Thomas and Kristin Nottelman combine for a five inning perfect game. It's the third perfect game for Mizzou this season and the 10th in program history. Jenna Marston led the way on offense, driving home three of the Tigers' ten runs, all of which were scored in the first three innings.
Thomas recorded her 500th strikeout in the victory, becoming the seventh pitcher in school history to accomplish the feat. She's only 17 strikeouts shy of breaking the single season record at Mizzou, currently held by Erin Kalka and set in 2004.
In their last Big 12 series, the Tigers' ten game-winning streak was snapped at the hands of Nebraska, 3-2. However, Mizzou bounced back the following day to record a 4-1 victory and split the series with the Huskers.
Oklahoma State is currently in third place in the Big 12 and hold a 15-3 record at home. They've won five of their last six games, having swept Texas Tech and Baylor in the process. Overall, the Cowgirls are 37-11 and 8-4 in league play.
Kat Espinosa has served as the ace for the Oklahoma State this season - she's 20-5 with a 2.33 ERA. The offense is led by Alysia Hamilton and Mariah Gearhart, who hold respective averages of .395 and .393. In conference play, the Cowgirls have batted .260, led by Tamara Brown's average of .353.
