Mizzou Volleyball Signs Six Commits

COLUMBIA -- The Mizzou volleyball program is happy to announce the signing of six student-athletes to national letters of intent on Wednesday (Nov. 14). All six will join the Tigers for the 2013 season, which will be the program's second as members of the Southeastern Conference. Joining the Tigers next year will be Carly Kan (5-9 DS/Honolulu, Haw.), Loxley Keala (5-11 S/Honolulu, Haw.), Courtney Meek (5-5 DS/St. Louis, Mo.), Linda Steinhardt (5-9 S,DS/Austin, Texas), Emily Thater (6-3 MB/Springfield, Mo.) and Julia Towler (6-2 MB/Blue Springs, Mo.). The class is the Tigers' largest since inking seven to NLIs in 2010.

Below are bios on the signees for the 2013 season.

Carly Kan - 5-9 - DS - Punahou HS - Honolulu, Haw.

High School: Named Hawaii State Tournament MVP in 2012 after guiding Punahou to an 18-1 record and a Hawaii Division I Girls State Volleyball Title in 2012 ... Her high school team was named the No. 9 team in the country following its State Championship by MaxPreps ... Guided Punahou to a second-place finish in 2010 and a State ILH Championship that year as well and did the same in 2009 ... Punahou earned second place in the Ann Kang Invitational in 2009 as well ... Named to the Sophomore 79 list by PrepVolleyball.com

Club: Selected to the USA Volleyball High Performance Girls Youth A2 Team as a libero in Tucson , Ariz. ... Played with the Kuikahi Wahine Roshambo at Junior Nationals ... Her team placed fifth in the Open Division of the USA Volleyball Far Western Qualifier in Reno in 2011.

Personal: Born on Jan. 16, 1995, to parents Darryl and Linda Kan in Honolulu ... Father, Darryl, played in the NFL as a quarterback for the San Diego Chargers in 1984 and the San Francisco 49ers in 1983 ... Brother Brett, also played quarterback at USC ... Performs as a singer and dancer when she is not playing volleyball.

Loxley Keala - 5-11 - S - ‘Iolani High School - Honolulu, Haw.

High School: Was a two-time All-State selection (2010, 2011) and was ‘Iolani High School's team captain from 2010-12 under the direction of head coach Kainoa Obrey ... Guided her team to a third-place finish at the State Championships in 2011 and was an IHL All-League selection three times in her career (2009-2011) ... Also lettered in varsity basketball in 2011 and 2012, guiding the team to a pair of top-three finishes at the State Championships, including runner-up nod in 2012 ... Competed as a high jumper on the track team at ‘Iolani High School as well ... Was heavily involved in activities in high school ... Member of the Athletics Leadership Council and Student Council and was a Senior Camp Captain ... Also served as ‘Iolani Family Fair Chair and Family Fair Advisor ... Was a delegate in the International Women's Leadership Conference in 2009 ... Was an Admission Orientation Guide and a member of the Headmasters List in both 2010 and 2011 ... Served as the Homecoming Chair in 2010 as well.

Club: Played for head coach Tommy Lake and the Oahu Volleyball Club where she guided her team to plenty of success on the AAU circuit ... Her U-16 Team placed first in the Florida Beach Open in 2011 and came back to finish second in the same tournament in 2012 ... She guided her team to a USA High Performance Silver Championship in the 2012 Hermosa Beach Open and then guided the team to a first place nod in the 2012 USA High Performance Hawaii Beach qualifier ... Attended the 2011 USA Volleyball Holiday Camp ... Member of the Aloha Region High Performance Team in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Personal: Born on June 10, 1995, to parents Lynden and Lani Go-Keala in Honolulu ... Plans to study Engineering while at Mizzou.

Courtney Meek - 5-5 - DS - St. Joseph's Academy - St. Louis, Mo.

High School: Totaled 183 digs and 22 aces while guiding St. Joseph's Academy to a 30-5 overall record, including a 5-0 mark in league play during her senior season ... Was not charged with a reception error in 71 sets played in her senior season, converting 130 chances ... Helped St. Joseph's to a State Championship in 2010

Linda Steinhardt - 5-5 - S/DS - Cedar Park High School - Austin, Texas

High School: Four-year starter and a two-year team captain for head coach Rebekah Almanza at Cedar Park High School where she guided her team to playoff appearances in all four years of high school ... As a junior, she guided Cedar Park to a regional final before helping the team qualify for the State Championships for the first time in program history as a senior ... She also guided Cedar Park to the first 40-win season in program history as a senior ... Named to the Dazzling Dozen, which recognizes the top 12 players in the area, in each year of high school and was the Dazzling Dozen Newcomer of the Year as a freshman ... Named to the Westwood All-Tournament Team as a junior ... Academic All-State for all four years of high school and was the No. 10 student among a class of 456 with a 5.30 weight grade-point-average ... Member of National honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club and Spanish Honor Society.

Club: Played for Jason Landers and Peter Salatich at Austin Juniors where her team qualified for Junior Olympics for seven straight years, medaling twice and turning in three top-five finishes ... Her U-16 team took second Nationals in the American Division as well in 2011.

Personal: Born July 7, 1995, to parents John and Mary Steinhardt in Austin ... Sister, Megan, played volleyball and Washington & Lee University in Virginia and her mother, Mary, played volleyball at North Carolina ... Plans to study Psychology at Mizzou or possibly math or journalism.

Emily Thater - 6-3 - MB - Kickapoo HS - Springfield, Mo.

High School: Named the No. 36 recruit nationally by PrepVolleyball.com and was named to the Under Armour/AVCA High School All-America watch list as a senior at Kickapoo High School under the direction of Coach Deborah Downs ... First team All-Conference, All-Region and All-District and was an honorable mention All-State selection as a senior in 2012 ... As a junior, she was named first team All-Conference, second team All-District and honorable mention All-Region ... Was also named to PrepVolleyball.com's Fab-50 list as a junior ... Guided Kickapoo to a second-place finish at the MSHSAA Class 4A State Championships.

Club: Played for Springfield juniors under the direction of Trish Knight.

Personal: Born Feb. 1, 1995, to parents David and Jennifer Thater in Springfield ... Is the Tigers' third commit from the Springfield area in the last three years, following the footsteps of Jade Hayes (Ozark) and Regan Peltier (Nixa) ... Brother, Daniel, is a student-athlete for the Tulsa Cross Country/Track and Field Teams and he won several MSHSAA State titles in his high school career ... Plans to major in marketing and advertising while at Mizzou.

Julia Towler - 6-2 - MB - Blue Springs South HS - Blue Springs, Mo.

High School: Ranked as the No. 84 on the Senior Aces List and was a top-50 junior according PrepVolleyball.com after starting all four years at Blue Springs South under the direction of Dave MacLean ... Second team All-State as a senior in 2012 and was All-State honorable mention as a junior in 2011 ... First team All-Conference in 2010 and 2011 and was second team All-Conference in 2012 ... Earned first team All-District and All-Region honors in 2011 and 2012 ... Named KC All-Metro honorable mention in 2011 as well ... Finished career with 977 kills, including 346 on .330 hitting in her senior season ... Guided Blue Springs South to Suburban Big Six Championships in 2010 and 2011, finishing undefeated both years ... The team qualified for the District Finals in both 2011 and 2012 ... Was Academic All-State from 2009 through 2011 and currently owns a 4.24 grade-point-average ... Member of the Principal's Honor Roll for all three years of high school ... Member of DECA and the Youth Advisory Council.

Club: Played for coach Amy Drawe and KC Extreme in Kansas City ... Her team qualified for the Open Level at Junior Nationals in every year in which she was on the team.

Personal: Born January 6, 1995, to parents James and Lena Towler in Independence, Mo. ... Father, James, is a Mizzou alum and her younger brother is a basketball player at Blue Springs South ... Plans to major in business while at Mizzou ... Will join Blue Springs native Lisa Henning on next year's roster.
