Mizzou Wrestling crowned MAC Champions
YPSILANTI, Mich. - Mizzou wrestling earned their first-ever regular season MAC Championship Sunday afternoon, defeating Eastern Michigan 31-7. The Tigers had previously captured the MAC Championship in the postseason the past two years, but had not been able to win the regular-season crown.
The No. 2 Tigers improved to 20-0 this season, further increasing their record for number of regular-season wins, and finished their MAC dual matches with an 8-0 sweep.
Mizzou won 8-of-10 matchups against Eastern Michigan Sunday afternoon, taking home bonus points in three. The Tigers had two pins on the day, with redshirt seniors Drake Houdashelt and Johnny Eblen defeating their opponents by pins.
Freshman Chase Brennan had his first dual win in his career, capturing 125 pounds over Blake Caudill 9-3. Reshirt sophomores Zach Synon and Lavion Mayes won at 133 and 141 by scores of 2-1 (TB1) and 9-4, respectively.
Mizzou's first loss came at 157 pounds but senior Ty Prazma captured 165 pounds with an 8-3 decision.
Sophomore J'den Cox, defending NCAA Champion at 197 pounds, won by a 5-1 decision while senior Devin Mellon captured 285 pounds with a 14-4 major decision.
The Tigers next compete in the 2015 NWCA National Duals Regionals. which is the team's final home match of the 2014-2015 season. They face off against American University on Sunday, Feb. 15 at noon.
The 2015 National Duals Finals will be held from Feb. 21-22 at the University of Iowa.
