POPLAR BLUFF - A southeast Missouri man is now facing second-degree murder charges for allegedly beating his father to death with a baseball bat. The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic reports that 27-year-old Matthew Jenkins of Poplar Bluff was originally charged with two counts of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Police say he attacked his parents at their home on Jan. 15.

The charges were upgraded after 56-year-old Carl Don Jenkins died Wednesday after relatives decided to remove him from life support. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Matthew Jenkins admitted striking both parents in the head with an aluminum baseball bat. Authorities have not released a motive.
