MO Senate To Discuss Requiring Student Curators for UM System
COLUMBIA - The Missouri Senate Committee is meeting Monday to discuss adding some new voices to the UM Board of Curators.
Under a new bill being pushed by Senator Kurt Schaefer, at least one member of the board would have to be a student. The student curator would have the right to vote on the hiring and/or firing of the president of the UM system, as well as general officers of the university system. They would not, however, have the right to vote on decisions regarding the hiring or firing of faculty or staff.
This act also modifies the procedure for selecting the student curator if the university adds additional campuses.
The first student curator will be appointed in January of 2014.
In order to qualify for the position, he or she must be a graduate or professional student, and will serve until January of 2016.
The student curator will also replace the non-voting student representative currently associated with the board.
The hearing is scheduled take place at 2 PM Thursday in the Senate Lounge in Jefferson City.
