JEFFERSON CITY – One of the biggest weekends for holiday travel is approaching and the Missouri Department of Transportation says it is prepared.

Sally Oxenhandler, the communications manager for MoDOT’s central district, said the agency will have crews available if something comes up.

“We are aware that this is a big travel weekend and we’re on standby to help as needed,” Oxenhandler said.

With rain in the forecast, there could be a potential for flooding in certain areas.

MoDOT will have crews watching those areas.

“If flooding does occur, we’re able to shut the road, just as soon as possible and alert travelers to that fact,” Oxenhandler said.

Construction will also affect traffic.

MoDOT has 15 active work zones on I-70 alone, between Kansas City and St. Louis.

Oxenhandler said most of the construction work would be suspended during the Independence Day weekend.

“We try to get out of the way, let motorists get to where they need to be going without our work zones in the way, but it’s not possible to pull up every work zone.”

The Missouri River Bridge project will still be under construction. The westbound bridge is closed, leaving two lanes of traffic in each direction crossing on the eastbound bridge.

“That is really a spot that travelers need to be aware of if they’re traveling to the lake, if they’re traveling between Jefferson City and Columbia.” Oxenhandler said.

She said drivers should allow extra time for travel, and to buckle up and obey the rules of the road.

MoDOt has traveler information map on its website.
